Response to Restriction Requirement
When the examiner considers that an application contains two or more distinct and independent inventions, they may require you to elect which one to proceed with. For the one not elected, you may eventually choose to file a divisional application in order to continue prosecution, keeping the priority date of the original application. The restriction requirement can be answered with Traverse or without Traverse. "Traverse" means a reasoned argument as to why we believe the examiner should not have required the restriction, since in our view it is a single invention. Even if you choose to traverse, the election of which "part" of the application you wish to continue must be made anyway, in case the traverse does not persuade the examiner.
